 Dental Assistant Schools
BY Michael Bustamante
A career as a Dental Assistant is a good choice today, since entry-level positions are in great demand. Most certified Dental Assistants will find good working conditions in the dental offices performing a variety of duties in a clean, bright environment. A Dental Assistant provides support to a dental practice by performing a variety of patient care, office, and laboratory duties. Dental Assistants see to the comfort of patients in the dental chair, prepare patients for treatment, and obtain dental records. Working alongside the dentist during patient examination and treatment is also a Dental Assistant's position. Other duties of a Dental Assistant may include sterilizing equipment, preparing and providing trays of instruments to the dentist for procedures, and instructing patients on post treatment care and general oral health. Sometimes Dental Assistants prepare materials for impressions and restorations, take x-rays, and process x-ray film. They may also remove sutures, apply topical anesthetics to gums, and remove excess materials used in the dental procedures. Dental Assistants often are required to perform office duties, such as scheduling and confirming appointments, keeping treatment records, ordering and stocking dental supplies, and even billing and receiving payments. Subjects of study to be mastered to become a Dental Assistant will include dental terminology and anatomy, preventive dentistry, nutrition, dental diseases, radiology, anesthesiology, and pathology. Good business processes and practices will also be a part of the Dental Assistant's curriculum. Most states regulate the duties that Dental Assistants perform through licensure, registration, or certification. Dental Assistant Certification assures a Dental Assistant's qualifications and abilities, and may be a strong advantage when seeking employment.
