The benefits of cosmetic dentistry

BY Dr. Natalie Ann Amann

Many people hide their smile because they are embarrassed of their teeth. This could be for a variety of reasons, from teeth being too small, to discolored, cracked, chipped, or broken. If you are one of the many people who hide their smile because you don't have perfect teeth, you might want to look into the benefits of cosmetic dentistry.

Many breakthroughs in technology have occurred in recent years when it comes to cosmetic dentistry, and one benefit is that these breakthroughs have made a beautiful smile more realistic and affordable for average people. Don't be deceived by appearances, cosmetic dentistry can not only beautify your smile, but can also improve their functionality. The benefits of cosmetic dentistry are numerous, but really, the best way to explain them is to take a look at the different procedures, and the differences they make for people. Common cosmetic procedures include porcelain veneers, tooth whitening, dental crowns, bonding, invisible braces and white fillings.

Porcelain veneers: A porcelain veneer offers excellent benefits for anyone who wants to change the appearance of their teeth. A porcelain veneer or a laminate is a thin shell of porcelain that is bonded directly to the front surface of a tooth. This procedure is only done to improve cosmetic appearance, and really offers no other benefits. However, veneers can create incredibly beautiful and natural smiles that will make you more confident, and your smile more beautiful. So, benefits of this procedure are improved appearance of the front teeth, the ability to mask discolorations, another benefit is whitening teeth and reshaping your smile.

Teeth whitening: Obviously there are plenty of teeth whitening systems out there, cosmetic dentistry teeth whitening refers to the kind of treatments you get in office, not the kits you buy off the shelf at your local grocery store. Even with dentist office whitening, there are several different whitening techniques available and can vary greatly in price. Professional teeth whitening treatments include, tray-based teeth whitening, and paint-on teeth whiteners, lasers, etc. Professional teeth whitening treatments, while more expensive than the over the counter variety has the benefit of quick results in as little as one visit. Probably the greatest benefit to whitening in general is that as a process it makes no structural changes to a tooth but has great outcomes for your smile.

Dental crowns: Dental crowns are a form of cosmetic dentistry that is used to make the same type of major cosmetic changes for teeth that porcelain veneers make. The difference is that unlike porcelain veneers which only cover the front sides of teeth, dental crowns are put over the entire tooth, at least the parts that that lie above the gum line. Dental crowns have the benefits of veneers, and the added benefit of being much stronger and more durable than porcelain veneers.

Dental bonding: Bonding is a process where composite matter is used to fill in holes, dents, chips, etc. in a tooth, bonding is used to shape or create parts of a tooth. Dental bonding offers the benefit of improving the appearance of any defect found on the surface of a tooth, including discoloration. Dental bonding is a great choice to replace tooth structure that has chipped or broken off, or to repair damage caused by tooth decay. Bonding also offers the benefit of being relatively inexpensive and is a procedure that can usually be completed in one visit.
